Is It Really the Photographer and Not the Equipment?

Just wanted to get any opinions on this subject. I hear people telling each other that it isn't the camera that matters but the photographer. I agree with that idea a little, but I tend to believe it is both the photographer AND the equipment. I figure it like this, give a beginner a thousand dollar camera and they'll take snapshots similar to a basic P&S. On the other hand, give a pro a short-lens P&S and nothing else, they will most likely take nice photos but they won't be able to do much for DOF. They won't be able to zoom on a wild creature from a sufficient distance to not scare the animal away. That would take higher quality equipment. Does anyone agree with my idea about equipment and photographer or am I talking out of my posterior?

it's both, only if you are using a camera's capabilities to it's fullest.

I get perfectly fine photos on an Phone but I can do a ton better with a DSLR. But if I were terrible a simple camera would do better.

Not only dramatic effects that a quality lens can add to a camera, but the more expensive cameras have larger/better image sensors. They handle color and detail so much better.

The day I got my first DSLR was the day I started getting compliments on my "photography". Pictures just look so much better when taken with good equipment.

If you take an DSLR and a P&S and make the same settings with both cameras, the DSLR will win every time.

Depends mainly on the subject. Some subjects just demand advanced gear. For easy subjects it's definitely the photographer that counts. Of course the backside of this game is that the novice likely would not know what to do with the advanced gear.

If you want to see what youthful creativity can create with a simple P&S camera, check out pages 4 and 5 from our June club newsletter. The club created a "class" for young people at a city community center, Canon USA donated 17 P&S cameras and Richmond Camera donated print services. Members of the club volunteered their time (and money raised from the auction for some antique cameras) to run the program.
Just look at a few of the photos these young people created. You will be inspired.

It is a pdf file that takes a minute to load but well worth the short wait.

A photographer has learned to see photographically, like a camera does. Once you've learned that, you can use any camera to achieve it.

The new features found on modern, pro level cameras make what we do easier.

Really? I can use an iPhone to get a shot of an eagle flying 200m away, filling the photo with the eagle. COOL!

Ignore all of those responses, it is the gear that makes the difference. The more you spend on a camera and lenses, the better photos you will produce.....;)

Why so serious?

Is that why the Hubble makes such cool snapshots? :woohoo:

chas, they're thinking of replacing the Hubble lens with a "nifty-fifty". No joke!

Some NASA guy read how versatile it is.
