Photographic manipulation. Good or bad?

13 years 3 months ago #14593 by spaceman
Remember when, if you saw a picture in the newspaper, then it must be real? And the old adage, "A picture's worth a thousand words."

In today's world of very Tom, Dick and Harry easily purchasing the tools to manipulate photos, can anyone trust anything they see any more?

Do you think manipulation of photography is a good thing or bad? I'm not talking just minor brightness/contrast adjustments or levels, I mean totally changing what's in the photo itself.

I don't believe anything I see printed in today's world. While I agree it's fun to "make it look like it ain't" I think overall, major manipulation of photos is having a negative impact on the news world. There's no way for the common person on the street to know if what he's being shown is the truth or make believe.

Manipulation all the way.

Hmmm interesting question. I think this will have many answers. There are those who would be classified as photography traditionalist who take a photo and place it in a vault for no changes to be made. While on the other side of the fence you have photographers off all skill sets, some of which are masters at manipulating photos via software like Photoshop, others are not as good. I think photography is an extension of each persons personality. So manipulate, or don't. If you are happy with the photo, and it appeals to your taste, then rock it!

As for me, I like tooling around with Photoshop and some of my photos. So I'm all for manipulation.

I dont like it I seen some people edit it so much it looks more like a cartoon. I like more or less the pure form.
