Mentoring groups vs internet interaction?

Don't know if this has been asked before or not, but here's what's on my mind at the moment.

What's more important to a photographer. A mentoring group that meets in person and provides "hands on" interaction or all the lessons and tutorials and internet information one can easily find without leaving home?

Internet... but I do like to sometimes go out and shoot with other photographers. Not learn by them (not unless it was a world known pro)

I've done the former and the latter. Honestly the "pros" can't teach you that much that you can't find out on the web. Also, in my experience a lot of these guys have strange habits often harking back to the film days (which you don't need to do anymore) and occasionally their advice is just wrong. Maybe the "pro" I worked with was just not as great as people make him out to be... but his results were nice.... sometimes I think though it's because their status gets them access to shooting sites and opportunities us normal folk don't have.

That's because you haven't asked. We don't just randomly throw around our knowledge, it's too precious for that.

I would have to go with internet first ....... Lots of good videos if you go searching. But I also have gained a good deal of knowledge for going out with another photographer. Photo groups just don't work for me. I do belong to a couple of groups but they are more for fun and the social aspect, not so much for the educational part.

I also learn tons by looking at other folks photos ... I study how they compose certain images ... what seems to work, what looks good, what looks unusual (important because unusual is not necessarily a bad thing) ....

And by posting images on photo critic boards. Some of these boards are bland with people posting the same tired old comments over and over and over .... But there are some really nice folks that take the time to offer well thought out and thoughtful comments.

I agree. The old "this photo's great no matter what" stuff is basically useless. :)
