Print anxiety?

13 years 3 months ago #14600 by julio.garcia
Does anybody else have what I call "print anxiety"? I have tons of photos, all over my computer and on CDs, but everytime I go to print one out, I freeze up. Is it good enough? Will people laugh at my efforts? It's just for my house, yet it's as if I think I'll suddenly be deluged with critics dissecting and dismissing my efforts.

Anybody else feel that way or do I just need a professional shrink?

You will always be your own worst critic. Learn to love your prints. We always measure ourselves up to other photographers. I found the best way to get over what you're doing, is to take pictures for just yourself sometimes. Something you can enjoy, and print for yourself. It's not always a competition, sometimes it's about capturing a memory of a place you like.

Our walls are truly our gallery at this house, all the way up to a 3' x4' print in the living room. Most are from places we've been and want to remember, some are collages , and my sports shots are in my office along with my magazine cover shots. Go ahead and print, mat, and frame them and get rid of the bare walls ! You will get enjoyment out of them even if no one else does. Don't be too critical of your work- your visitors might surprise you with complements that you never expected.

No print anxiety here.

I love printing. The first time I printed one of my photos, I enjoyed even more then what it was on the computer. I also have a digital frame on the wall 13x19. My husband has a 8x12 digital frame. (actually the smaller frame is mine too, but I let him use it.) :) I love them. My husband bought me the big one for a Christmas present years ago. I bought myself the smaller one for my desk at work. B)

Just recognize that the piece of paper and the ink involved costs about as much as a latte at Starbucks. How many times have you ordered a coffee or a drink someplace and not finished it? Wasn't the end of the world, was it? Same thing with printing. Get in there and do it. If you don't like the results - who's to know but you. Tear it up and try another one.

I bought a blu-ray player recently and found it has Picasa Web built in. I can load some photos there and use the blu-ray to turn the TV into a big digital photo frame.
Just need to get some Cat5 cable and run it under the house. Wish it was wireless. Oh well. Should be fun.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Maybe it's just me but viewing pictures on a LCD/Plasma screen just doesn't feel as nice as a good print.

You definitely need to get past that. One reason: I found that the more prints I made, the more inspired I became to do better work, to broaden my subject pool, to experiment with different lighting, techniques. etc.

Seeing hard-copy prints of my work on a regular basis has changed how I shoot and what I shoot. So just do it!
