What is a good amount to charge?

I normally shoot sunsets and wildlife.
A friend ask me to take pictures of her and your boyfriend. This is the first time I will be taking portraits that people will be hanging on their walls and passing around. She wants to pay me, but I don't know what to charge?

Since this is your first time, why not do it for free. You can put the best portraits in your portfolio. Just charge them say $25 if you burn the pictures to CD or if you print them charge a %.

Thank you. That's a good idea. Maybe I will do that. Where can I go to print them?

Well if you need to print them right away, you can always go to Walmart, Walgreens. Or check out Mpix www.mpix.com/ They print excellent quality.

I agree. Mpix does print excellent quality. I had several of my nature work printed from them. Can't beat the price for the quality. I've seen Walmart's prints and I'm not crazy about them. My mother had a large photo printed at Sams club and it came out pretty good.

Its a good way of building up a portfolio, you could just charge them your costs so you are not out of pocket.

Is there a costco's over there they are very good with printing.

When I'm in the States, I use Costco all the time and never been disappointed. AT $1.49 per 8x10, you can't go wrong. They now offer gallery canvas prints for way low prices:
8x10 - $29.99
11x14 - $34.99
12x16 - $39.99
16x20 - $49.99
18x24 - $54.99
20x30 - $69.99
24x32 - $79.99
14x14 - $39.99
16x32 - $79.99
16x48 - $99.99
I have had them done in Canada also (I think it's a different vendor) but the quality was still good.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Does everyone favor matte finish?

It is what it is.

Doing it for free in exchange for advertising to their friends for you is a good idea - if you don't need the money.

If money's tight - like in my house - you should at least get your materials costs back. That's neglibigle, of course, if they don't ask you to make prints. You could also ask for a modest hourly fee - maybe $15 an hour or so.
