Painting with light?

I read someplace where the old time photographers when photographing a large area, such as a factory or warehouse, used a technique called "painting with light." Can someone explain what that is?

Painting with light is what photography is.

You might be talking about using flashlights or LED lights on long exposures.

It sounds like there are two different "painting" techniques in question here.
One is, like the OP mentioned, a dark building where you use a long exposure and paint the dark corners wit a spot of flood light. The have also seen this done on caves where flash can not reach the crevices and the shooter adds light via flashlight of even a pattern using a laser pointer.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Yeah, painting with light is very vague, OP needs to be a little more specific.

When I first read the title I automatically though of the long exposure with torches (or as u guys call the "flashlights".

But baydream's suggestion could be it too.

Or it could be using super powered lasers to cut designs into the side of the building.

Saw a laser "paint" show way back in '82 at the World's Fair in Knoxville. Wish I was into photography this deep back then.

Does that question bring back memories. You first set up the camera where you figure you will get most of the area. You work with a photo flood reflector and one 500 watt photoflood bulb. Shut off as many lights as you possibly can in the areas and close the aperture on your camera all the way down. Set your shutter on time open. You will need a very long extension cord. Turn the photoflood on and walk around the area actually painting, that is moving your light up and down and sideways like you would with a brush or roller. Cover as much area as you can being careful not to get your figure in between the light and the camera. Use the light as you would if you were actually painting with paint. It does require practice and usually a series of exposures as it is difficult to know if you are getting the light even.
