What do you think qualifies one to be a photographer?

This term means something totally different to most of us here. I was on my facebook page and started noticing many who claimed to be a photographer were indeed younger people in high school who had just a point and shoot camera. Now I'm not judging, because there were older people I noticed also who claimed to be a photographer and were shooting with a point and shoot only also.

Purpose of this thread? None, just stirring the pot. :catfight:  My opinion, those that make a living with professional equipment deserve to be called a photographer. Heck, I'm not a photographer, I like the hobby, but don't consider myself to be a photographer.

So post your feedback, let's here it. I'm bored. But better get back to work! I'll be back in a few.

If you have a camera in your hand and you are taking photographs then you are a photographer, maybe the question should be "at what level" the people you describe sound like amatuer photographers at the base level, to me anyway.

Anyone behind the wheel of a car is a driver, though many can't drive.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

If you have a camera and you are taking photos, there is no other term than "photographer" that describes what you are. Now you may be a crummy photographer, regardless you are a photographer.

You took the words verbatim out of my mouth. If you use your camera to produce photographs, you're a photographer. But not a PROFESSIONAL photographer unless you substantially make you're living with your camera skills. You can be a photographer at many levels.

Pick up camera, press button = part time photographer
Pick up camera, press button and chat about it online = photographer
Pick up camera, press button, chat about it online and die a little inside each day = full time photographer

I was on my phone earlier. Was in a hurry, edited to be a powerful statement now.
