Photography Projects Gone Wrong

10 years 4 months ago #335895 by StephanieW
Just read earlier today about some kids who were working on a photography project who accidentally caught fire to a field in Topeka.  They were taking pictures of twirling flames or something.  ( link )

Got me thinking, what are some disasters or near disasters that you've encountered while trying to set up a shot?  Most people on this forum seem cautious enough to not actively play with fire, but I figure there's got to be some good stories here.  My stories mostly involve me getting injured in an effort to protect my equipment.  I was walking along a rocky coast to get some pictures and tripped.  I sacrificed my body to save the camera and ended up with skinned knees, a blood elbow, and a huge bruise on my arm.   The camera survived without a scratch.   :)  I've thankfully never caused damage to another person or another person's property.  I've certainly never caught a field on fire.

Other than making a fool of myself, I'm happy to say none for me.

A few years ago, I foolishly decided to take some street shots in downtown San Jose, Costa Rica.  I had been warned not to wear any jewelry in the city so as not to attract any street muggers.  Never once did I think about my camera being something that would endanger me.  I was poised and getting ready to take a shot when 3 fellows ran up to me.

One of them punched me just under my eye.  He grabbed my camera, but the strap was still attached to my wrist.  I saw "stars" from the punch and it made me furious.  I am a non-violent, peaceful type. But, for some reason, my reptile instinct came through and I punched the guy right back.  He fell to the sidewalk and I looked down to see that his nose was bent to the side of his face and blood was gushing everywhere.  The other two grabbed him under his arms and dragged him away and yelled to me, "Tranquilo, tranquilo, tranquilo!" (Stay calm! Be peaceful!) I think that they were just as shocked as I was that I turned into a crazed, mad woman.

I spent the rest of my vacation with a black eye, but I had a lot of fun explaining it to folks.  I still have the camera!

Besides the occasional dropping of a camera/lens nothing really. A few of those were from my days of misspent youth from drinking too much.

Yeh the one time I dropped a lens it broke and cost too much to replace. So I switched to Canon.

Would catching poison ivy count as projects gone wrong?  If so, last year while laying down in a field to get a shot of the forest sideline, I unknowingly had been laying down in a bed of poison ivy!

Shooting the most fantastic Cardinal images I've had the opportunity to make. Then you look down and the shutter count was 42 and you have a 36 exposure roll of film in the camera. Durp....

These are fabulous stories. Oh my gosh, Tuscan, that's terrible though! At least you have a good story!

I'd be upset too if I looked down and discovered I was shooting film.
