Down sides to using a lens filter reducer?

I know the upside is saved $$, but what are the downsides?  Can I expect vignetting when using one of these?

Do you mean step-down rings to put a smaller-diameter filter onto a larger-diameter lens?

Yes, potential vignetting. Depends upon the lens size, filter size, and sensor size.

And also aperture. Using a smaller aperture will use less of the lens surface so it might not hurt.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

As long as the adaptor ring does not get in the way you will have no problems. Have a look at the Cokin filter systems:

If you mean step up ones then the only potential down side is not being able to use your lens hood in certain shooting conditions. I use step up rings quite often, I do not own any step down.

Oh Yeah the lens hood is going to be an issue. If you are going to be a serious filter user maybe you want to think about a matt box system that can easily swap our filters.
