Have any of you heard about using welders glass as a DIY filter?

How many stops is welders glass equivalent too?

It's been awhile since I researched it but I think the most common strength is generally about 10 stops. It's only good for B&W though due to the colorization.

Will this give a warmer or cooler tone?

Man, I tried welders before and the results were horrible IMO.  I wouldn't even fuss with this if you are serious.  Besides you can get decent 10 stop ND filters these days for affordable price.

The only thing that welders glass is good for is solar observation on the fly. For an ND they are terrible.

The quality of the glass is NOT acceptable for photography. Even the least expensive multi-stop ND is eons better.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.
