Is it really worth shooting in RAW for most of your work these days?

So time to bring this up again.  I was just looking over some of the new camera specs and admiring features.

So with that said, is it still worth shooting in RAW for most of your work?

You don't think newer cameras are bridging the 'need' gap with JPG files?

What is a "'need' gap?"  JPG files are compressed and in the process of creating the JPG, data in the raw file is discarded.  How can that possibly be desirable?  I will concede that it may be acceptable for some.  But not for me.

I'll be shooting in RAW regardless, you get more data to work with.

Only when that newer camera takes a flawless picture every time.  With zero need for editing.  So far I have not seen any camera that even comes close.

It depends on the image. For my own personal  images, it's always Raw. For clients, it depends on their needs, mostly Raw, but sometimes not.

There is a reason while all better cameras (still) have Raw software. Editing in Raw is still easier. And your Raw file will always be your negative. You can go back daily for years to the same image and re-edit it to something else, like b&w, sepia, halftones, etc. You do not have to work from jpg copies with the fear of editing and saving the original jpg.

If you really want to have as much data, then yes it is.

Only time I shoot in JPG is for family events where the photos will be shared with family right away.

Absolutely. I don't take my camera out of raw mode.

The only gap you are going to see is the difference in data  you get with a RAW file and JPG.
