Magazines or newspapers hiring staff photographers any more?

Or are they all just freelanced these days?  I've contacted a couple local papers and couldn't get a clear answer.  Not to mention, getting to the hiring directors was a PITA.

Magazines and newspapers stopped hiring staff photographers when digital came out and all these freelanced photographers were photos for MUCH less than cost of keeping a staff photographer on board.

At least in the case of print media, I think most publications probably don't have much of a budget for a full time photographer. It's a dying trade. If you're looking for work, I'd head in a different direction, because even if you do find a position, I wouldn't count on it being there forever.

Short answer is NO....There may be some publications that still are, but they are few & far between.

Back in the day, did the staff photographers get paid good with major publications?

Even in the TV news business, some reporters do the reporting and set up a camera on a tripod to record their report. It often is a one man band unless it is a big story.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

And it's not just photographers, writers as well.  A good friend of mine who was with a local paper was let go last year after 25 years.  Cutbacks all over the place, not just photography.
