iPhones cameras same tech as mirrorless cameras?

Man, I hope this isn't a dumb question.  But I'm going to go after it anyway.  Is the camera in the iPhone, pretty much just a miniature version of a full blown mirrorless camera?

Yes Steve, "pretty much a miniature version" is a good
description of what it is where miniature does not mean
lousy in anyways but the results could not reflect all the
flexibility of a full size camera — DX or FX.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

Short answer: yes.

More words: a sensor that is constantly subject to light is always getting hit by photons. A capture means sampling the sensor over the amount of time specified by the shutter speed (as opposed to resetting it, or whatever happens, opening a shutter and closing it, then sampling the sensor). None of this depends upon the size of the sensor.

FWIW, there were some problems early on with Sony Alphas, in that a long-ish exposure wasn't sampling simultaneously, resulting in some odd images under certain circumstances.

They are very similar when just using the electronic shutter. Mirrorless cameras do use a curtain shutter unless the electronic shutter is specified. The reason electronic shutter isn't used all the time is because of what is called "rolling shutter". Shooting action will distort the image because the line read out of the sensor isn't simultaneous. It's read line by line and during that time the subject has moved. The best mirrorless at this time with the least rolling shutter is the Sony A9. The goal of the camera makers is to develop a "global shuttered" sensor so the readout is simultaneous. So in overall terms they are very close but in other ways they are worlds apart.

Annnd .... both cameras will project the image to a monitor/live Tv screen for the photog to frame. Mirrorless cameras can be setup for the photog to view the image as it will appear if captured.

There are photographs everywhere. It is the call of photographers to see and capture those images.

You know what, I never really thought about it before.  Good post and topic.  I feel this would be another odd ball trivia question that one day I will now know! LOL

Can you imagine if the shutter in a iphone had a mechanical shutter?
