XQD reader that is USB-C - What a joke!

5 years 1 month ago #636541 by Roger Lang
I bought a Nikon Z6 2 weeks ago, which of course uses the XQD memory cards.  The problem is nearly all the card readers that are USB-C on Amazon have horrible ratings.  The ones that have semi OK reviews are USB 3.0, which I can't plug into my Macbook Pro because there are no USB ports, just USB-C!

Seems like someone fell asleep during the connectivity meeting!

So you can get this adapter on Amazon for $8:  https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01COOQIKU/?creativeASIN=B01COOQIKU&linkCode=w61&imprToken=ztgAw9C675.H4geU0UC3Fw&slotNum=0

Which means at least now I can use the Sony reader, which is the maker of this card I bought.  While on that topic, why the hell didn't Sony come out with a USB-C for this thing?  Isn't this supposed to be the card of the future?

Using the $8 adapter above, will that slow things down seeing that I'm going from USB-C to USB now?

Thanks guys.

I have, as main working station for PP, a new iMac i7 5k and
got the Sony dual reader MRW-E90 with Thunderbolt III.

So far, very fast and cool to work with.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

Gnarbox has one that is supposed to be in B&H inventory in mid April.

That should only be a mechanical connection device. Shouldn't be any smarts in there, and it shouldn't impact throughput.

Curious: have you compared transfer times with hooking the camera up directly to the Mac? Is either method notably superior?

+1 as long as the connection is clean, there shouldn't be any slow down.

I saw that Gnarbox one and it looks pretty good.  Some of the reviews on the Sony show that it heated up and fried their USB port.  Keep an eye on that.
