Have you focus fine tuned camera body/lenses?

5 years 1 week ago #639872 by Chris Briggs
I seem to recall one of the photo boards that I belong to chatting about this a few months ago.  I was flying and just scanned the thread without responding.  But just started to think about this and the need for doing this.

I mean how can you test to see if your gear needs such focus tuning?

If it turns out that there is something off, is this an app, or ??? that is used for doing the tune?

I use 16 lenses and 4 bodies. All lenses have been fine tuned
to all 4 bodies… THIS IS A MUST in my book.

I see you got the D800 which is very capable to fine tune any
lens you want to mount to and work with… no app necessary.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

I just discovered how important this is. It's on my list of projects to work on while it's raining.

Is there a good chart to use for doing this?

I do have a tool for my 16x4= 64 fine tunes but you can use
a simple ruler at 45°.

Is there a significant difference between macro and non-macro in terms of how accurate it needs to be? I use my AF-C for butterflies and I use a pretty shallow DoF. I am wondering if investing in a tool would be worth it for the accuracy. Is this reasonable, or just stick to the ruler?

For me, it MUST be critically focused what ever the tools.

DoF and critical sharpness are two different things. You
don't need, for just a few lenses, to buy anything.

I use the Datacolor Spyder LENSCAL

Thanks again. More food for thought.

G'day all

As NS says - try a ruler
Better still - blu-tak a sheet of newspaper to one of your walls, draw a texta [felt-pen] line vertically down the sheet then set tripod & camera at 45deg and varying distances away. Shoot the texta line using different zoom & F-stop settings and compare results

Ezy-pezy ~ image below shot at 420mm x 9~10ft from subject

A flat surface will tell if in focus or not but won'treveal by how much.
