Photographing Women

13 years 2 months ago #28454 by beth21
Can one make a living photogrpahing only women? I have trouble relating to men and I find when I photograph them, we (the subject and me) are both disappointed in the results. But my work with women, young and elderly, always pleases my subjects.

Lots of photographers specialize, so why not.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

I would say yes. Matter of fact females are the #1 subject of the world. Remember sex sells, females are 9 times out of 10 the subject.

I agree 100 percent.

I think more women tend to have their portraits done than men, so why not specialize. Especially if you hire (or yourself become) a make-up artist and hair stylist. You could be a private "Glamour Shots" type studio. I think it would go great.

I'm not sure where you're located, but i would think you could make it work in a larger metropolis area where there are lots of people. It'd be a numbers game - in other words, out of so many women, how many get portraits taken. And out of those, how many can you entice into your studio? Of course, this will also lead to doing weddings. Decide if you can handle the situation if a man or men are only part of the subject group. Some photographers spend their entire career without ever photographing a wedding.

It really should not make any difference what the subject gender is. I think you start the photo session of males with the mindset of 'This is not going to be any good' and guess what! A subject is a subject is a subject - concentrate on the technical stuff and posing and clear you head of this male/female hang up. It is easier to photograph women as they bend and twist - pose - a lot easier than men do, I prefer to photograph women. Just go photograph loads of men and have the same mind set as when you're photographing women, you're doing a photo-shoot, that's it. Sorry if you feel my tone is a bit blunt! As a full time professional I have to just get on with it!
Take care and enjoy your photography.
