Lexar SD card has more connectors than another?

I have a couple Lexar SD cards and just noticed that one has more connectors than the other.  Why is that?

The second is a newer high speed card—> SDXC.
Nothing to do with that maker… they all produce it.

No, that's not quite correct.

SDXC cards have been around for a while, and can operate at lower speeds.

Those connectors are for UHS-II cards, which are an extension of the SD form factor.

UHS-II bandwidth can go much higher than SD*. Not that anyone uses it yet. For example, 4K 30p video only requires about 30MB/s, which any decent SD card can handle.

Not really sure what the point of a marketing video is, but it doesn't change anything.

I'll elaborate.

HC means "high capacity"; XC means "extended capacity". Both came onto the scene a number of years ago when the base size of SD cards had to grow past the original architectural design. The designation has nothing to do speed, only capacity.

That video clearly mentions (at 19 seconds in) that speed class is denoted with U3. Neither "HC" nor "XC" appear anywhere on the screen at that time. For a reason.

Anyone wishing to educate oneself can google for details. For example, read more here:

Well that is interesting.  Personally I don't understand why these additional contacts would be needed?  Is it just a larger surface for contacts to touch?
