Beauty dish catchlight played out?

4 years 7 months ago #657095 by Chris Briggs
I bought a beauty dish last week.  Actually 2 weeks ago.  Another photographer was telling me today that beauty dish catchlights are played out.  Does this have any truth or popular opinion by photography community in whole?

I'm going to do what I like, but I'm kind of curious on this.  Wouldn't think this would not be popular.

Like other things in photography and graphic arts,
AD's have to fight for edges on their market. My ex-
perience is that most of the time AD's will create or
stick to some visual effects and features specially in
the fashion and other luxury industries.

Personally, I use the soft light — or beauty dish as you
call it — mainly in given product photography and ra-
rely in portraits because of the catchlight that was so
hot with DA's in the past.

… and yes, you should always do as you please as long
as you don't work for a client.

I think he was commenting on OPs comment that it’s played out.

Catchlights can be a tricky thing because of both trends and knowing how to use them in their respective situations. There have been times that I felt as though the catchlight was terribly distracting and robbed the rest of the photo of any attention, even the products they were selling. However, sometimes the clients ask for that, and you can discuss your thoughts and give some suggestions, but in the end, they are paying you to the job that your agreed to.

Its another tool in your kit to meet the clients’ needs, IMO. On your off time, have fun with it though. Do what makes you happy

Yeah, but if that floats your boat, go for it.
