12MP for photography in 2020?

3 years 8 months ago #694398 by Tim Dulaney
Over the weekend I was reading an interesting question on another board that opened up the discussion of 12MP for photography in 2020.  Many siting that 'MP' have become so cheap that really the norm today is 20MP+.  Now, others suggested that their 12 and 16MP cameras still had a home in their current day camera bag and cameras actively getting used.

This was an interesting topic to follow, so I'm regurgitating the question here.

Where do you stand on this?

I am using different and irreplaceable bodies with…

12 MP D3S for low light, web, sports, and newspaper where high resolutionis not the point but the must have picture in any situation.

24 MP D3Xs for limited prints and publications.

36 MP D810 for larger prints and centrefolds, high end catalogues

45,3 MP D850 for wildlife — combed permanently to the 600 ƒ4

Pixel count is just another way to spell "tool"!

Nikon D700 was (is still) a work horse and that camera is 12MP

G'day Tim

Two of the three bodies I use are 12mpx - and I am more than happy with the results

The =however= is that none of my stuff is commercial (as is NS + others here) and the largest I am regularly printing is A3 / 12" x 18" and they are nice 'n sharp as well

Over the years I have printed a number of 20" x 30" posters, and the largest I have printed from 12mpx was a 40-inch wide job - more than viewable in the average loungeroom ~ but it would probably not be acceptable to "us fusspots here"

So would you say if for commercial work, the 12MP might be a little dated then?

Is a smaller screw driver "a little dated"?

Commercial work for the web will be well served but,
for anything else, the handle may be too short or tip
too small.

OK, I'm clear now.  Thank you.   The web is more forgiving.
