Would you say a professional website is worth the investment when starting out?

A close friend who has literally just bought their first camera 3 weeks ago, now is looking at hiring a developer to build this professional website that will cost her $2175.  I was telling her to hold off, and there are considerably less priced options if she must have a site now.

Do you agree, or just let her go for it.  As a friend, I felt I should pass on this tip.  Heck $2175 is a very nice lens in my book!

There are cheaper solution, you're right. Some propose
subscription models of ready to use templates that are
pretty swell.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

She would be in for a rude awakening if she does that. She needs to build a successful portfolio before even thinking about a website...The market is full of "professional" photographers. Many it seems are using base model gear, even smartphones. Not that one can't take pro grade images with that gear but a portfolio of images will sell her services more than a website will. Especially at that price point...

OMG, SmugMug, Squarespace or Wix can be picked up for $20-$30 per month and is fully turn key.
