One sure way to make money in photography

13 years 2 months ago #29220 by stag
Porno seems to be the only money making opportunity in photogrpahy at this time. I know it's considered morally wrong in some people's minds. Please, don't give me lectures on sin, I just want to know how to make money with my photographic knowledge. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Shall I go the porno route - legal age and all that, of course - or continue to slog along trying to make a buck here and there selling my work at local malls, county fairs, etc.

I don't have the money to set myself up in a studio.

"In art, immorality cannot exist. Art is always sacred. Even if it takes for its subject the worst excesses of lust it can never be immoral since its purpose is truth of observation .... Every beautiful work bears witness to a victory its author has won over the difficulties of his task .... All of nature belongs to the artist .... What looms larger than desire? ... Nothing is more moving than the maddened beast, dying of transports of pleasure ....
- Auguste Rodin

I say, go for it. Just keep it legal.

There are avenues to make a living at photography. Few are easy. Portrait photographers require studios but often wedding photogs can get by without. I have friends that photograph kids athletic teams (team shots, individual (for cards), and action shots. Malls, fairs, and "craft shows" usually bring low dollar returns since they are the habitats of bargain hunters. Art shows can bring in cash if you can join a group that puts on such shows but you have to have a "special; something".
Don't underestimate yourself. Like actors, many photographers have second jobs to make ends meet until they get that big break, be it a big sale or a major award. My friend in KY got his break when he won a Nikon national contest. www.thephotolane.com/

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Don't sell out to peddle smut man.

Anyway, people won't buy something they can get on the internet for free. I think you'll find all you'll gain is a poor reputation.

@mellow Porn is FAR from being art. LOL

Whoever told you that porn is the only way to make money with photography is ignorant.

Commercial photography is rampant right now, portraits bring in money. I know wedding photographers that make $200,000 a year. There's photography websites making business that way, stock photographers making 100 grand a year. One of the highest paid per hour jobs in the world is food photography.

Porn photography died when the internet came out.

Don't sell yourself out like that.

Have to agree with SN it aint art. There are always ways of making money without having to resort to that which is common. It is a matter of finding something that there is a need for and filling it. Hell I have been though all of the building trades and even done jobs that were menial. There is even day labor it sucks but it will pay the bills and many times can lead to full time if you impress the bosses.

I am a person that believes in freedom of choice. The best choices are made with wisdom, something that I'm still trying to learn. I can tell you that I am very thankful that I'm 42 and not 21 again largely because of the choices that I did make at that age. Choices WILL affect you later.

Please re-think this idea even if you only consider one facet of the idea, how it affects YOU. Don't think for a minute that other professional photographers won't know you and the fact that you do porn shoots. Don't expect to hear from big ticket event shooters saying, "I saw your work and was wondering could you come help me out?" I dare say the the effect of a choice here to do porn shots is bigger than you think it is, and could mean a self-imposed label that you will have a hard time walking away from when you realize just how much damage it has done to you and your view of adult relationships.

It is what it is.

Well first off, you may like to look at porn, but that doesn't mean it's easy to photograph (unless you are open minded). You have to be comfortable to be around people having sex and remove yourself from the sexual scene to ONLY to be the photographer. and NOT include yourself in the scene.

If you want to make money with porn, you need to get into video porn...not photos. Or be the porn star. There are so many free porn sites, that to sell your own porn pictures its going to take alot of marketing and convincing customers your porn is worth the $19.95 membership over the FREE porn.

And porn is not the main, only or top money making in photography. If you think that, then you know nothing about the photography industry and only want to shoot porn for the sex appeal.

The only guaranteed way to make money in photography is to sell cameras.

Sounds a little distasteful IMHO. Now if you are into that then go for it, I'm no pro, matter of fact I'm a rookie. As motivated I am to hopefully make some money at this, I personally would not go down that path.
