Canon vs Nikon vs Olympus

13 years 1 month ago #35098 by martini joe
I currently carry a little P&S Canon A620. It takes great pictures, don't get me wrong, but I'm thinking about upgrading to a "big boy's" SLR camera. I've narrowed it down to 3 choices:

Canon EOS Rebel T1i
Nikon D80
Olympus E620

I've gone online and read all sorts of reviews and they all say "pick me, pick me, I'm the best." Just wondering if anyone on the site actually uses one of more of my choices and what you're hands on pros and cons would be.

Thanks.

I have lots of experience with the Olympus point and shoot... I just love them. I wanted a mainframe camera too and went with the Canon 60D. I just love the transition.

I have a Canon XSi (and an XT) and am very happy with them. You can't go wrong with Nikon or Canon, just broke.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Im a Nikonian and have a D300. I had the D80 and loved it, till I got the D300 then it felt too small to me so I couldnt use it anymore.

I had/have the D80. I like it while I had it. Upgraded recently to the D7000.
The D80 is no longer for sale brand new. Nikon Doesn't make it anymore. So unless someone on ebay has a D80 and never used it...you will be buying a used D80. If you do that, you might as well buy a brand new D3000, D31000 or D5000.

I completely disagree.

I wouldn't buy a nikon camera under the D7000. So in your position I'd go canon.

I use Nikon D90 bodies (2) and a D80 and have loved all 3 . I also work with a Canon pro who loves his bodies and line of lenses. you can't go wrong with either brand but remember that once you get started switching brands is prohibitively expensive so be sure of your choice.

Tough choice. They'll all perform better than a P&S. Even though it has a superb quality lens line, I'd shy away from the Olympus for three reasons though:

1. Smaller sensor size = a lot of noise at high ISO. I know two people who owned E-series Olympus, and eventually moved to Nikon and Canon because they were disappointed with the Olympus noise and more limited dynamic range.

2. Easy to get telephoto, HARD to get wideangle lenses, and they're expensive!

3. The viewfinder is maddeningly tiny

OK so the 500D (T1i) is an old model (soon/now they'll have the 600D)
The D80 is an old model, that's replaced with the D90 and in turn it seems the D7000.

Nikon also have the D3100 and the D5000... but as Scotty said, I'd leave those alone and go for the D7000 or Canon 600D.

Here's my advice (going from cheapest to most expensive options):
Canon T3i (600D)

Nikon D7000

Nikon D700

D7000 has better AF and high ISO performance over the 600D. 600D probably has more video framerate options and a flip out screen.

:goodpost:

You would have to decide what you want to do with the camera but you can't go wrong with any of the above, then budget to spend your money on good glass.....and practice.....as many will tell you a good camera in the hands of a bad photgrapher still gives you bad pictures. the camera only captures what the lens sees, which is what you see, so on top of the camera try get the best glass (lens) you can afford.
