Lens repair question

13 years 1 month ago #35509 by FunnyGuy
A buddy of mine somehow managed to scratch the end glass on his 6 month old 70-200mm lens today and he just called me up asking if this could be repaired? I have not seen the lens, but apparently there is a small scratch in the glass? Can this be repaired, and if so, by who?

Thanks!

I had mine repaired (not a scratch but an autofocus issue) by Canon. They did a good job, fairly quickly and at a reasonable price. I'm sure Nikon has the same service. Canon provided a price guesstimate when I completed the online form.

Other than a slight contrast loss when light sources are near the frame, I doubt that you will ever even notice any degradation of the images it takes. In olden film days, we used to fill the scratch with "India Ink" to minimize any contrast loss...Otherwise replacing an element will be fairly pricey as they can't fix it ant other way...

Can't they just fill the scratch with the same stuff they fix windshield's of cars with?

You won't notice a tiny distortion on your windshield but you will on a camera lens. I'll bet that if you had to look through the windshield ONLY at the point of repair, you might miss that bus coming at you.
Lenses glass is very carefully crafted and polished to remove as many imperfections as possible.

Yeah I didn't find much about people successfully repairing with the same method that they use to fix windshields.
