$800 for a head?

I'm surfing around and stumbled on the Really Right Stuff web site and looking at their stuff. Can someone explain to me why in the world would you need a head that cost $800? They have this Gimbal PG-02 FG head for $800. What is the purpose of a head like this?

I would never pay $800 for a head. I can see why this head is expensive, but I don't know why $800. I can understand $400. It's a very useful head. Actually the more I look at it, the more I like it. It could come in useful for me, but I still wouldn't pay $800

Higher end gear, probably for super telephotos.

I'll say!

Has a load capacity of 50 lbs. Even Wimberleys don't hold that much. I'd get this for a heavy telescope or perhaps sigma 200-500 lens. Otherwise, it's overkill I'd say. Looks like a really nice gimbal head though.

A gimbal head like the RRS is used for supporting super telephoto lens. They are excellent for wildlife photography, especially birds in flight. Not sure is the RRS gimbal is worth a couple of hundred more than the Wimberley gimbal ... but to each his own.

$800 isn't all that much for a gimbal if it's good quality.

I'm sure there are buyers lining up for these things. Personally I wouldn't be in that line. Nice head though.
