Definition of a SNAPSHOT?

My wife and I have a recurring discussion about photography and I'm interested in others' points of view.

What's your definition of a snapshot? Versus a photograph? Is there a difference? What is the difference?

Here's my take on it. A snapshot is a photograph that is not planned or set up. It is like a snap comment, it may be terrible or it may be a masterpiece. Same thing for snap decisions. Happy accidents do happen, be they comments or snapshots.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Everything I take is a snapshot, some are good, some average, most -? Unless you're taking a portrait or something like that, most are just snapshots.

I saw several definitions indicating that "a snapshot was a photo taken with a small hand-held camera". I did not agree with that one and found this:
"A snapshot is a photograph that is taken quickly and casually." Much better.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

no thought process behind it.

To my way of thinking, I define snapshot as a personal photo that has no real interest to anybody except maybe the photographer or his family. There's rarely any asethetic value - except for that once-in-awhile lucky shot.

IMO, a snapshot is a picture that is exactly that...snap shot. What people do with their cell phones when they are drunk in a bar.

The old school definition was any photo taken with out the use of a birdie or cheese...:woohoo:

But not always without the whine.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

If I look at a photo and the first question that pops into my mind is "Why on earth did I take THAT?" then that's a snapshot. :pinch:

I think of them as photos taken spontaneously with little or no thought to composition, location or lighting. Just a spur of the moment impulse captured on "film".

A snap shot is a spur of the moment pic , usually on a P & S, that has intrinsic value at the moment . A photograph requires some thought and evokes some thought in the viewer.

It does look like a snapshot. It is under exposed.
