What lens to rent for Long Beach Grand Prix April 15-17th

Wha Who!! Grand Prix is nearly here. I'm still in California and this will be my first time attending this race. I have a friend of mine who lives in one of the condo towers that the race goes around. I'll be on the 19th floor and my longest lens is a 70-200mm (Canon). I will have access to a couple of the corners and straight sections of the track. I was wondering what lens would be a good lens to rent for this event?

Anyone going to this too?

I'll be there. Very fun event to attend. I shot the race last year with my 70-200mm and will use that lens again this year. You could always use a teleconverter to get some more distance from your 70-200mm or if you really wanted to get close, rent a 200-400mm. Oh wait, your Canon? Does Canon make a 200-400mm?

I sent you a PM, I will be there. Let's catch up!

Canon's got a 100-400.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Sigma 50-500 or 150-500 would be OK I think.

Or Canon 400 5.6L and a 1.4 extender.

Canon has a 200-400 coming out, but probably not till after you go.

I'd go 300 f/2.8 on crop, and 400 on 1.3.

I said 400mm on 1.3, which is a crop factor (canon's 1d series cameras..their sport cameras).

it's a f/2.8.

You mean a 400 with a 1.4?

300 2.8 is way to expensive most likely. Depends on the dude's budget.

BTW I totally forgot about Canon bringing out the 200-400 with built in 1.4 extender.

Renting should only be a few hundred bucks, even for the 400 f/2.8.

Personally I'd rather pay a bit more than the rental price and get a 150-500 from sigma, sure the quality won't be as good, but you get to keep it. ;)

The OP has a 40D so it would be 400 on 1.6.

I would think a 400mm would be very nice lens to have for a race like that. I went to the 2007 Long Beach Grand Prix and it was certainly a good time. They have some bleachers that you can get some good seating on as well for photographic opportunities.

That is awesome! Have fun! I'm sure your 70-200 will be fine. Are you really going to buy a bigger lens for just one event?
