Converting a Nikon D40 to Infrared camera?

12 years 11 months ago #68483 by Superman
I hope to get a D700 soon so my old D40 I would like to convert to infrared. How much will this cost to do it right? Is there any other filters or hardware that I would need to get started into infrared photography?

Nikon D90 & D40 18-55mm, 55-200mm, 35mm, 50mm, 105mm, SB600

Sounds like a good idea. If it was me, I would first buy the infrared filter to see if I like IR photography enough to convert my camera.

I believe my friend said he spent about $500 for his Canon XT conversion.

Me oh my!!!Just check lifepixel for the price....Crazy.To be honest can`t see myself paying that much for a conversion when I can get a converted camera at Ebay and occassionally KEH.com plus there are other options.

If you are very mechanically inclined then you can do the conversion yourself via viewing the Lifepixel guides. But Lifepixels is the very best at doing the conversions from what I have seen.

Don't they offer camera's built that way from manufacture? Or will filters and post processing do the same?

I'm not aware of any of the OEM's offering cameras already set up for IR shooting. That's not to say there are not any, but I'm sure coming from an OEM they would be pricey...As for using IR pass filters, older DSLR's have weaker anti-aliasing filters over the sensor & as such are easier to use thee filters with. Newer cameras require much longer exposure times (tripods needed always). I have a Nikon D70s & with a Hoya R72 IR Pass filter I can capture IR images, handheld at times, depending on conditions, & then do some post processing for different results. The converted cameras are much easier to use but once converted, cannot be used for normal photography unless changed back over.

If I remember right Maxmax has some cameras in stock they have converted to either HotRod or IR.
