What are they for?

I keep hearing about these battery grips. What are they for? I was wondering if I should get one, but I dont know what they are for, though.

You get longer battery life because you can put two batteries in them and they can also run of AA's if needed. They add bulkiness to the camera and allow you to shoot in portrait with ease by giving you control dials in vertical position and a shutter release in the vertical position.

Many things. If you have large hands, they make the camera easier to hold. They also add more battery power so you can shoot longer. One more thing is some come with a shutter release for holding portrait (vertical) format.

Matthew :)

PS a heavier camera is easier to hold steady than a light one.

I dont fully understand the vertical buttons thing. I dont know what the battery grips components are, but from what youre saying, Im getting that they have a shutter button on the bottom and you can use this instead of the cameras built in buttons if needed?

A photographer friend of mine uses a battery grip and he tells me it will also help when using long lenses...your rig won't feel so front heavy since there's more weight on the body end.

After a quick look through amazon, I see how they work. I probably should have just looked there first but I was wondering about the advantages of them. Is there any brands that you would reccommend?

since you have a Canon, you should stick with a Canon battery grip.

Here is the Zeikos grip mounted on my Canon XSi with both horizontal and vertical mode.
My Zeikos from B&H works perfectly. Half the price of the Canon and just as high (or higher) ratings.

The vertical pix has a quick release plate on it (not part of the grip). Ignore that. The shutter release is on the "top" so you don't have to hold your hands awkwardly to shoot vertical.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.
