Snapshot photo albums

12 years 11 months ago #89613 by Nikonjan
I have been looking through some peoples albums to Rate and comment but I'm finding a lot of photos are just snapshots, family outtings, travels etc. They just don't inspire me so they get passed over. I know it takes training to understand composition, lighting, software, etc. Not sure if I should comment on them as ways to improve since I wasn't really asked or just keep passing over them. Do people wonder why they never get comments or ratings? I'm not the best myself but I work on my photos and only try to post what I think is my better work. . I like to be positive and encourage but don't want to sound like a no it all. What are everyone elses thoughts?

:agree: I also see alot of photos that appear to be the typical snapshot family outing type shots. So is the person uploading the photos in the ablum to simply have a spot to show their everyday pictures? Or is the person uploading the pictures to get help from others to try and improve?

We don't know, unless the person puts an comment in their album stating..How can I improve?, How can I make this picture of my son on the swing better? etc...

To some people, leaving a comment on how to make the picture better could be an insult to that member. As they have no intensions to get an honest feedback for the picture. They just want a place to put their pictures, which they choose photography talk.

But then there are some people who are looking for honest feedback, we don't give it, because we don't know and they get upset because no one comments.

It's a double edge sword.

Thanks Crystal for your thoughts on this.

:goodpost: I have seen the same. Not that all my photo's are award winners  but I am always open to honest feedback. Although I am tempted to post a snapshot album just to introduce my family, but these are not meant as anything but a Mom capturing her kids, you know snapshots.

That is great! I think if people title their albums as Family photos,Vac. snapshots etc, maybe that would be helpful. Things I see are crooked horizons, no subject, (just sky) etc.Blown out exposures, things like that.

People should mention it if they would like feedback or critique. If I don't see an invitation I assume they are just sharing.

All I can say is wow. I started a review spree and man I can't give the stuff one star but some is just what Jan said- snapshots. Tons of burn. Tons of flare. Very little composition. I just simply pass those right on by. Can't critique those who don't want it. This has inspired me to edit my albums because not everything is goo and should be removed.

Gosh, you don't have to remove photos that you want to share. I'm just saying it's hard to give people a rating or feedback, a lot of people on the photogaphy sites are new and don't have training etc. It just makes it hard to rate or comment which is how we get some of our points here when they aren't inspiring. I was on one group on another site and when I posted flower photos they made a comment, that everyone and their mother takes flower photos and they aren't anything special, for a long time I quit taking them and posting them. I now try to make them a little different than others. Not everyone will like how I create my photos and that is fine. Everyone has different tastes.

I agree. I just left my photos. I am too tired to deal right now. But I did make a snap shot album and it is labeled as such.

Thanks for that discussion Jan,"mj" and Crystal. The same has been bothering me a bit as I look through the albums. You can tell som eof them are snapshots of family and maybe not expect to get a rating or comment. However, there seem to be a lot of shots that juts don't seem to have ANY positive qualities. Rather than 1 rate them, I simply bypass them unless the poster asks for a critique.
I am a HUGE fan of honest critique (as our club does one with a pro photog every other month) . The learning experience is amazing. The more I hear the critiques of my work and of the other member's,the better I understand what makes a good photo (I think it makes me better at offering critiques also).

Good thread.

I welcome any honest comments or critiques as that is the only way to get better. Especially my hockey albums can be boring to those who aren't sports fans so I put my other albums in for those into landscapes and nature to peruse.

You hockey shots are always amazing so it's great you look to other outlets. I have tried most areas (except studio work) and enjoy getting feedback.
