I used to when I shot canon. When I switched to Nikon, I just use the 2 second timer if I want a shot where i don't touch the camera.

What camera do you have?

Now for the last few years with my Nikon D90 I had both their ML-L3 remote and their MC-DC2. The ML-L3 ($14.95) is a actual wireless infrared remote, I would rate this thing a 6, only because it seemed to work 60% of the time. Then the MC-DC2 ($26.95) is their cable release that you plug into the side of the camera, this is what I used most of the time. This I would rate a 10, for what it's intended to do, it works excellent.

I recently picked up a D700, you have a couple choices for cable releases with this camera either the MC-30 (I think it's like $70.00) or the MC-36 ($126.95), actually there might be other options, these are the only ones I had looked at. I ended getting the MC-36 because it had a time lapse timer feature built into it. I've only used it once, other than it's a PITA to tighten the cable on the camera, this thing is pretty awesome I have to say.

I use the Zap-Shot radio remote for Canon. It works great. During a big family group shot at Christmas, people could not figure out how the camera kept taking shots.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

I've got a wireless remote and use it quite often, even when I don't really need to. :)

It does have one advantage over the self timer, at least on the D70, when you use the setting on the camera for remote, after the picture is taken the camera setting does not go back to single or continuous release on its own as it does with the self timer option. This means you can set up for one shot and use the remote release then take another shot right away...very nice!

It is what it is.

I always use my shutter release, well 90% of the time when camera is on tripod. What camera are you getting?
