One of the more difficult decisions to make concerning our photography gear isn’t about what camera, lens, flash, or tripod to buy but what kind of bag we need. I think part of the reason for that is sometimes we don’t think about our bags and cases as photographic accessories but as an afterthought.
I’ve found an awesome manufacturer of leather photography bags that fulfills the many needs I have for useful camera and lens bags. It’s HoldFast Gear, and they make all of their bags, straps, and other accessories right in the heartland of the USA out of durable and beautiful leather and other fine materials.
Let’s have a look at some of their products to see what you might consider for your next leather camera bag.

The Case For Using Leather Photography Bags
Leather photography bags are a good choice for professional and other serious photographers for two primary reasons, in my opinion.
The first reason is that leather is an excellent material for things that need to be durable, flexible, tough, and weather resilient. Why have societies from antiquity and on used leather for clothing, tents, saddles, pouches, and whatnot? Because it’s a tough material that is easy to work into a design for many needs.
The second reason I like leather photography bags is that they look good. I prefer a nice bag or case over a bag that looks like either a burlap sack or a ‘70s polyester box.
In the real world, when you're shooting to make money out of photography, how people perceive you does indeed matter. For instance, if I’m photographing a wedding or a corporate event, while I don’t want to look like James Bond in Monte Carlo, I also don’t want to give off a caveman vibe (apologies to any cavemen or women reading this).
High-Quality Leather Photography Bags
A leather photography bag that is as durable as it is beautiful makes an excellent choice when we give thoughtful consideration to how we carry and store our camera and lens equipment. Leather photography bags are good protection for our high-dollar photography gear, too.
This is why I’m glad I found HoldFast Gear, a manufacturer and retailer of high-quality, well-thought-out, and gorgeous leather accessories for photographers and videographers.
The materials used for the leather photography bags are usually either bridle leather or American Bison leather. These leathers look amazing and give users a fair amount of protection. The bags are not prone to tears or holes, and leather naturally affords a bit of resilience to weather conditions, though not 100% waterproof.
Something I like about fine leather goods is how leather wears in with use. Just like my favorite leather duster, the leather gets soft and supple while remaining strong, and it also gains a lovely finish that is unique to each piece.
Now let’s see a few of the leather camera bags and other leather accessories you can choose from at HoldFast Gear.

Holdfast Indestructible Briefcase
Holdfast Indestructible Briefcase - Indestructible is the reason for the existence of this bag. It is made from thick bridle leather and has no sewn seams at all because seams can fail over time. Instead, this briefcase-style bag is put together with 97 copper rivets hammered in by hand.
It has one large compartment and seven pockets of various sizes. The strap is wide, thick, and comfortable, and the fastener is also bridle leather looped through a metal ring. The bag measures 11-3/4" tall by 15-1/2" wide by 4" deep. Among leather camera bags, this bag is special; it’ll probably last longer than the rest of my career!
Holdfast Leather Explorer Lens Quiver
The Holdfast Leather Explorer Lens Quiver might strike you as odd at first sight, a camera bag with an open top. This lens quiver is designed to be a support accessory for a photographer actively on the job.
The inspiration for these leather camera bags is an arrow quiver, such as what a hunter may use while actively pursuing game. This lens bag is deep enough and is slightly padded so your lenses or second camera with lens is protected, but its open top lets you grab what you need without any delay.
The Explorer Lens Quiver can be used on its own with the leather strap worn across your body or over the shoulder, but a wonderful ability of this bag is that it can be used in conjunction with the MoneyMaker camera holster-style strap. I find this lens quiver to be among the best leather camera bags to use while engaged in a photo shoot.
Holdfast Leather Western Utility Pouch
The Holdfast Leather Western Utility Pouch is also worthy of consideration. We carry more than cameras, lenses, and lighting when on location at a photoshoot. We might also carry film, batteries, memory cards, or AirPods.
These pouches come in three sizes, and you have the option of either soft leather or a hard shell cordovan. They are put together with hand-hammered copper rivets and can be added to other leather camera bags and straps, or used on their own with a metal attachment.
Holdfast Indestructible Journal
The Holdfast Indestructible Journal is a 26-rivet, three-snap, four-pocket leather cover for your journal or notebook. Made from American Bison leather, it also has a smooth cow leather finish on contrasting leather pieces.
More from HoldFast Gear
The item that first attracted me to HoldFast Gear wasn’t any of their excellent leather camera bags but the camera holding solution known as the MoneyMaker Camera Harness. For my personal use, this is the best strap around.
