TSA check points with camera gear

1 month 3 weeks ago #659773 by Miss Polly
When did they start requiring you to turn on your camera when going through security? My husband and I just got back from Hawaii, and the outbound flight on the back side of the TSA security check, I was asked to turn on and off my camera.

I've had this happen a couple times with my computer, but never with my camera.  When did this start?

Can't comment on this as I have not experienced being told to power on and off my camera.  My computer, plenty of times.  Mainly with international flights more than domestic.

The camera has a battery in it and they possibly
want to see it pulled out… for safety reason.

Nothing to do with battery. They want to make sure it's a camera and not just a shell of a camera housing a bomb, etc...

I've had them do this with pagers, cell phones, laptops, and now in the past year with cameras, or anything battery operated. It's just a sign of the times. I have so much metal in me that the last time I went through the whole body scanner, I warned them, but then when I went through it the operator said "man you twinkle like a Christmas Tree". Many heart surgeries and joint replacements are the reason. It's h**** to get old, but not as bad as it used to be. I consider myself to be Bionic now.

It did not happen to me in June in the pre-check lane.

Yup, I haven't taken a lappie in years, but the last couple times they wanted to see it operate. I would just leave it in sleep mode until I cleared security.

For me, they removed it from the bag and tested it themselves then swabbed everything (including asking me to remove the battery) it with I have no idea what, and gave it back. Dirtied the heck out of the lens though. I'm guessing they tested whether it worked also, but I was too far away to tell. When I asked if there was an issue, as I've never had it happen before, they told me that it was random. I figured they were looking for drugs or worse, but I let them go about it. I'd rather clean the lens than miss my flight.

I haven't had an issue with my laptop and this was a first for the camera.
