Lost another lens hood this weekend!

3 years 2 weeks ago #713912 by Adam S
I have such the worst luck with lens hoods.  Particularly with my 24-70mm.  When I walk around and my camera is to my side, it brushes up against my leg and last year I lost 2 lens hoods, and as mentioned, this weekend I managed to loose yet ANOTHER.   If these lens goods were cheap, I wouldn't be so ticked off, but for a hunk of plastic, these things aren't cheap.

Put a small piece of gaffer tape on the lens hood to the lens.  That will keep it put.

Looking at the attachment side of the hood, you see the two
slots that give flexibility to the click over the lens notch. Try to
reinforce the thiner line.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

+1 on the gaffers tape, that stuff is golden here.

Adam, are you using aftermarket hoods or ones from Nikon?  I have found aftermarket hoods don't fit the same.  You have to go with manufacture lens hoods.  They cost more, but are better made and fitment is tighter.

I had the same problem a number of years ago.  Never got it squared away till I had the lens replaced with newer version.  I feel your pain though, it was very frustrating.

I had only one lens that I had a tough time with the lens good, that was a Sigma 10-20mm back in the day.  That hood would never stay on.  I thought it was cheaply made, so ended up selling it.

I guessed I lucked out, never had any issues like this.  Did you accidently screw it on wrong to cause the tabs to get flattened?

I never have had any trouble loosing lens hoods, but then I'll only use them when actually needed. On a zoom lens it's just too easy to zoom past the point where the lens hood begins to block the corners of the photo. They are always in my camera bag though, and I don't hesitate to use one if shooting toward a bright light or the Sun to avoid lens flare. They just tend to get in my way otherwise.

Go to Ebay and search for your hood under the JJC brand. MUCH cheaper than Nikon, and every bit as good in quality.

I lost one when I pushed my camera out the window of a fast moving helicopter. I watched it descend 2000' into the Pacific Ocean.
