When I taught photography part-time at a local community college, one of the first assignments I dished out to my students was to have them photograph a self-portrait of themselves without actually showing themselves. Think about it and give it a try. How would you show who or what you are without showing your physical self?
If it's not a picture of yourself, it's no longer a self portrait. That assignment doesn't make sense

If the purpose of the lesson was to get people to think outside the box then I'd say it was a success. It might take a day or two to accomplish something worth showing and to analyze the concept. It does make sense in the same way the sound of one hand clapping does.

No, it doesn't make sense, at all. If he said, take a picture of yourself, without your face in it, it'd be more along the lines.
But saying take a self portrait without it having a self portrait is circular argumentation, and doesn't make any sense.
It should be re-worded is all.

I was thinking of a montage of sorts or perhaps a pile of symbols like military medals, a wedding ring, a few children's toys, a camera, anything else symbolizing my past present or future.
