Self-portrait without showing yourself.

When I taught photography part-time at a local community college, one of the first assignments I dished out to my students was to have them photograph a self-portrait of themselves without actually showing themselves. Think about it and give it a try. How would you show who or what you are without showing your physical self?

Post some of the results.

Interesting, I will need to think about this. Would a silhouette count?

If it's not a picture of yourself, it's no longer a self portrait. That assignment doesn't make sense :X

I was thinking the same, perhaps a enhanced version with Photoshop?

If the purpose of the lesson was to get people to think outside the box then I'd say it was a success. It might take a day or two to accomplish something worth showing and to analyze the concept. It does make sense in the same way the sound of one hand clapping does.

No, it doesn't make sense, at all. If he said, take a picture of yourself, without your face in it, it'd be more along the lines.

But saying take a self portrait without it having a self portrait is circular argumentation, and doesn't make any sense.

It should be re-worded is all.

OK, let's think outside the box. Two facts about me - I am half Irish and I like to knit. Could this sample of an Irish knitting pattern be a portriat of who I am without showing myself?

By Jove. I think you got it. The instructor was not referring to your physical being, nut to the fabric of your being. Who you are, not what to look like.
Now THAT is truly thinking "outside the box". Congratulations.

:agree: I was thinking of a montage of sorts or perhaps a pile of symbols like military medals, a wedding ring, a few children's toys, a camera, anything else symbolizing my past present or future.

Then don't call it a self portrait :catfight:
