Can you tell just by the look of a photo whether it was taken with a Nikon or Canon?

Have your attention? No joke I just met a guy at the coffee shop who claimed he could tell if a photo was taken by a Nikon or Canon, just by looking at it? The guy had 2 cameras around his neck which is what originally was the cause of the conversation. One was a Nikon D3 and a Canon 7D. Nice gear if you ask me.

Any way, with out looking at photo meta data, can you tell if the photo was taken with a Canon or Nikon? I'm saying no, but this guy sure was pretty convincing to say the least.

Are you in the market for a spare bridge I just happen to have?

There might be some minor differences but I doubt 99% of the people could spot them.

No matter how fast I go, there's always someone slower in front of me.

Mostly no, generally they have slightly different looks, but you can make one look like the other.

nope.

This kind of question has been asked in many forums. I think some people really do believe you can. IMO, if you have the same quality camera and lenses...then no you can't tell.

Gear is more important to some folks than others. I've known photographers who were only into it for the gear. They took photos but they were all test shots to figure out the gear. Just look at the conversations on this photo forum and others. The majority of the conversations are about the gear. This leads to people who actually carry two brands at once. It seems a little silly to me, but I'm sure he could justify it. ;)

He might be able to spot the difference in his own work, but I doubt he could tell the difference as accurately if the photos were from other photographers. Even in his own work the differences would be extremely subtle and mostly about processing.

My walls at home are hung with photos I've taken over the last 20 years. They range from 8x12 to 20x30 in BW and color. They are all either silver gelatin prints or C-prints. Many of the digital BW prints are C-prints. They were shot with a wide variety of film and digital cameras. I ask these sort of questions of photographers all the time:

Which were shot with a Leica?

Which were shot with Zeiss lenses?

Which are film and which are digital?

Which have the Tri-X look?

Which are APS-C DSLR and which are 35mm DSLR?

Which are BW C-prints (black made with dye) and which are silver gelatin prints (black made with silver)?

And so on. The answers are all over the place. No one has ever successfully picked the Leica shots. They can't spot the Tri-X look. They can't tell the difference between shots from my old 20D and my new 5DII. They don't seem to be able to spot Zeiss lenses. They can't tell which are BW C-prints on RC paper and which are silver gelatin on FB baryta paper. They even have a hard time sorting film from digital.

I've read comparison reviews where a Canon and a Nikon were being tested and compared.. In the articles, there were always images showing the differences in color, temp, tone, clarity, etc....
In all of these, the photos were shot from the same spot with exactly the same camera settings, and shown without any post-processing... in that case, he might be able to distinguish but, otherwise, no way in hell to tell...

If there were a "best" he wouldn't need to carry both cameras.
