Mirrorless cameras may be the future of camera technology, but Canon DSLRs are still very much alive and well today! Not only are they the preferred choice of many professional photographers, but their budget-friendly prices also make them great options for beginner and intermediate photographers.
One excellent resource with loads of used Canon DSLR cameras in stock and a place I have bought and sold countless photo and video gear throughout the years is MPB. They are a trustworthy and reliable online platform that sells used photo and video kit at unbeatable prices.
Moreover, all of their cameras are carefully hand-inspected by skilled product specialists and backed by warranties, allowing you to make your purchases confidently and worry-free. Another fantastic feature of MPB is its online marketplace, where you can trade in and sell your old gear to help offset the cost of new-to-you photography and videography gear you want and need.
With that said, let’s jump in and take a closer look at three of the best Canon DSLR cameras on the market in 2023!
Table of Contents
A Good Canon DSLR Camera: Canon EOS Rebel T8i
The Canon EOS Rebel T8i (or Canon 850D as it’s called in Europe) is an entry-level DSLR featuring a 24.1-megapixel APS-C sensor and an advanced Digic 8 image processing engine. It came out in 2020 and is the flagship model in Canon’s “Rebel” camera lineup. It’s the best Canon DSLR for beginner photographers and kids.
The Rebel T8i has both JPEG and RAW imaging capabilities, and the quality of both is superb. For new photographers, however, I recommend sticking with JPEGs as they take up less space and look terrific straight out of the camera. Regardless of whether you shoot JPEGs or RAW images, colors are bold and bright, thanks to Canon’s beloved color algorithm.
Additionally, the camera is super user-friendly, courtesy of a handful of customizable buttons and an intuitive menu system. The fully-articulated rear touchscreen LCD is also a nice touch. It is perfect for shooting selfie photos and videos.
Speaking of video, the Rebel T8i now records 4K (although, unfortunately, a 1.6x crop factor is applied). Overall, with an average price of around $600, it’s a wonderful option for people on a budget. If that is still out of your price range, the best DSLR camera under $500 is its cousin, the Canon EOS Rebel SL3.

A Better Canon DSLR Camera: Canon EOS 5D Mark IV
Next up, we have the award-winning Canon EOS 5D Mark IV. A high-resolution 30.4-megapixel full-frame sensor and a powerful Digic 6+ processor are at its core. Although it was released in 2016 (replacing the Canon EOS 5D Mark III), it remains one of the most sought-after DSLRs in the world. It’s the best Canon DSLR for intermediate and professional photographers alike.
With a max resolution of 30.4MP, the image quality of this camera is stunning, and images look great even when enlarged for printing. Furthermore, the low-light performance of the Mark IV is phenomenal, and noise is kept to a minimum, even when shooting at high ISO levels. For best results, use a lens with optical image stabilization like the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L II USM.
The Mark IV is also an excellent video camera. It features 4K video capabilities, HDR video, Dual Pixel autofocus, and two microphone/headphone jacks. Slow-motion movies can also be filmed in-camera, albeit at a resolution of 720p/120p.
More features worth highlighting are the lightning-fast Dual Pixel Autofocus, seven frames per second burst shooting, fully weather-sealed body, and built-in intervalometer for creating time-lapses.

The Best Canon DSLR Camera: Canon EOS 1DX Mark III
Last but not least, we have the spectacular Canon EOS 1DX Mark III. It debuted in 2020, and while it looks nearly identical to its predecessor from the outside, internally, it’s a whole different beast. Sensitivity, video, autofocus, and speed are all areas that have seen significant improvements in the latest iteration of this camera.
Similar to the Sony Alpha a7S III, this Canon DSLR is built around a full-frame image sensor with a low pixel count. Therefore, each pixel is larger, making the camera more light-sensitive and better suited for video and low-light situations. The ISO range of this camera is off-the-charts, and it captures mind-blowing 5.5K video at speeds of up to 60p.
Unlike the a7S III, though, the 1DX Mark III also excels at shooting still images. RAW images retain tons of detail, have outstanding corner-to-corner sharpness, and have a large dynamic range. This gives you a ton of wiggle room when editing your photos and allows you to make your photos pop!
More noteworthy features of this camera are the 20 fps continuous shooting, Dual Pixel AF, two memory card slots, and ridiculously long-lasting battery life. The one downside is it’s expensive. But it’s the best Canon DSLR money can buy if you can afford it!
