So, is photography your most expensive hobby?

Also have 56 gibson les paul (original), prs custom 22 1999. Fender 57 tube amp original. Music is fun.

 I'd love to have a classic les paul like that. And nothing beats that old Fender tube sound. The Taylor isn't my style, but it is a nice guitar. I think the Martin/Taylor feud is right up there with Mac/PC and Nikon/Canon

I 100 percent agree with that!

Scuba-diving can be as expensive. when you look at the price of the top line regulator, dive computer, jacket plus the cost of each dive.

I've never been. Going to Aruba in fall. Thinking about trying it out.

I laughed about boating being the most expensive. It has to be. Sails, boats, travelling, time .........
Now photography seems to be a sucking on the money, but not in the same scale.

Great topic.

In the grand scheme of things I think it's how you look at it from your financial perspective. If you are a super rich person it probably isn't that expensive compared to some others (Charlie Sheen and the hookers in the closet). And there definitely have been more expensive hobbies listed!

Personally for me, I don't think it's that expensive and I'm in no way super rich. I think the initial investment into a good camera and a few accessories is what gets people. I can't speak for most but the ones I have spoken to that are interested in starting start going off about getting a D4, 3 super lenses, Photoshop and so on without stopping to think, "Do I really need all that to begin with?"

I Know I was like that several years ago but now I look at the hobby, find the main items I need and then slowly work on that.

For example, I do wood working and to me that is an expensive hobby! If I were to fit out my shop with all the top tools I would easily have $500k wrapped up in it. My photography hobby, maybe about $2k which is a huge difference.

Maybe it is, as there are no limit how much equipment you want. But I consider it the cheapest as it gives me the most satisfaction and so much pleasure . It has open my eyes for what is around me in a way I would never have seen it if not for being in to photography.

now wait a minute......hobby? profession?
If you are a professional, you get to deduct your photography equipment and expenses from your taxes. I know some of y'all said you are professionals.....

Ok, I'm splitting hairs, but darn it, I want to deduct my toys from my taxes too!

:P

This is by far, one of my least expensive hobby's.

I do not comment often, but when I do, it is always profound. **Laughing at myself**

You guys should try flying.

Just to gain a Private Pilot's Licence in the UK is over £7,000 assuming it is all finished with minimum hours. Then hiring an aircraft cost from about £130 per hour plus landing fees. Fortunately I did my PPL (the only hobby flying I did) out in the USA where it was considerably cheaper, especially 20 years ago. Becoming a professional for that was painful though - very expensive and the UK does not allow us to write off training against tax unless it is to improve skills you are already earning money from.

However now I could, even if I did it for fun, offset against tax now. There are enough good reasons for me to fly that the tax man will accept. SO that'd only cost me £100 an hour then!

I think I'll stick to photography!

For me, it's motorcycles. The Harley alone makes a lot of ground for photography to make up. Add 4 or 5 more bikes to that (which is where I currently am  ), and that gap gets even bigger. Photography is definitely my second. I'm IN LOVE with photography at the moment.
