This Week in Photography History
As popular as funny photos of cats are on the internet today, it’s actually something that’s been practiced since the beginning of photography as an artform. One of the earliest cat photographers was Harry Pointer, who, from his studio in England, arranged felines in humorous poses and costumes and even added silly captions to his photos. As a result, his ridiculous cat portraits became extremely popular, much like similar photos go viral today.

Amanhecer by Mario Mendes
This glorious shot of the sunset over a coastal village is the epitome of using light to create mood. There is a sense of calm with the hint of pink and orange cloud in the background, and the lighting illuminating the white buildings in the village adds a great deal of detail. Nice snap, Mario!
Untitled by Doug
Doug is back with this incredible image that pairs a gorgeous landscape with a dark, mysterious person. This is a prime example of how adding people to a landscape shot can really punch up the drama!
False Bay by Mark
Speaking of mysterious, the abundance of dark tones in this shot make it feel like a scene out of an Alfred Hitchcock film. The hint of light in the clouds and the white of the waves in the foreground give the image just enough dynamic range to prevent it from feeling too heavy. And the inclusion of the buildings in the foreground beg the question, “Who lives there?”
Untitled by Michael OKane
This image made our editors jump for joy because it is a prime example of what a fun, candid portrait can be. The framing is impeccable as well - just look at that perfectly level horizon!
Reflection of a Robin by stevef.Stop
This wildlife shot of a robin is an excellent example of how a solid depth of field works in your favor for wildlife shots. The background is full of blurry goodness, giving the robin the perfect backdrop to take center stage in the image. Its reflection in the pool gives the robin even greater importance in the shot while adding to the depth of the image as well. Fantastic job, Steve!
What’s New on PhotographyTalk
This week we published a number of articles on incredible photography gear that we feel will help you take better photos and improve your bottom line. How to Get Great Shots at Parties for any Age Group explores how you can use Gifyyy, a self-contained GIF photo booth, to get the shots you need of party-goers, no matter their age. It’s a fun way to get people involved, and the GIFs it creates are shareable on social media, which helps you promote your business. That’s not a bad deal!
In another article, Mirrorless Camera Owners Wish Their Camera Had This, we discuss the value of the Spiderlight Hand Strap from Spider Holster. The strap gives mirrorless camera owners an incredible level of freedom when out shooting. Without the hindrance of a neck strap, there’s no worry about getting tangled up or catching it on a passing object or person. And, because the Spiderlight is so well designed, it fits like a glove and lets you shoot comfortably all day long.
In other news, we’re focusing on writing more articles related to the most popular photography topics - landscapes, nature and wildlife, portraits, macro, and black and white photography, to name a few. Keep your eyes peeled for daily additions in these categories! And, if you’re a member of PT ON Demand, we’ve just added new lessons to the landscape category. Be sure to check out these new additions on composing better landscapes!
