So You Say You Support Women In Photography...
But do you really? How many women photographers have you bought prints off of in the last year?
How many classes have you purchased led by women?
Think about the last photography seminar or networking event you went to. What was the ratio of men to women?
How many female photographers do you follow on Instagram?
Discrimination in The Field
Discrimination in photography often rears its ugly head on social media. Just a few weeks ago, a female photographer didn't get a high-powered job because she didn't have enough Instagram followers.
The easiest way to support women in photography also happens to be the cheapest (read: free) way.
We are also helping you get a head start and put together our list of the 15 female photographers you should be following on Instagram, with some notes on why they're so special.
Instagram's Unsung Photography Heroes
Number One
Topping off our list is Sangeetadephotography.
Sangeeta is not only a rockstar landscape photographer, but she also happens to be a woman of color.
She's worked with National Geographic, the BBC, CNN and Time Magazine, and yet she only has an abysmal 7,000 followers on Instagram.
Number Two
Our second recommendation is MyLavenderBlues, which is run by Julia Calleo. If you've ever had the pleasure of visiting the midwest in the States then you know exactly how much food plays into the lifestyle there.
Calleo was raised between Japan and the East Coast, but now resides with her adorable little family in the midwest.
We love when women are able to use Instagram as a platform to share not only their photography, but their lives as mothers.
Number Three
GingerUnzueta takes what Calleo does and magnifies it.
Unzueta's Instagram is devoted solely to photography of her family, something that could easily become boring without her skill, artistic eye, and storytelling.
Number Four
KateWoodman_Photo's reek of her Portland, Oregon origins. Each photo is an examination of color, womanhood, and time.
High-fashion portrait photographers are rarely bold with makeup, wardrobe or the model's expressions, yet Woodman is bold with all three.
Number Five
The sign of a great photographer is oftentimes a cohesive Instagram, but Vivienne.Mok takes this to new heights.
Each photo is delicate and ethereal. Nearly all feature women; nearly all feature warm, cascading light.
Every photo is intentionally posed and not afraid to let you know, yet they still feel sincere.
Number Six
HelenNishi, or goth goddess as many have taken to posting on her Instagram pictures, seems to be finding her exact place in the world of photography.

Her feed bounces between self portraits, recreations of various decades, and explorations of 35mm film.
She's young; she's covering too many forms of photography, but this makes her work accessible. Her cell number is displayed prominently on her website. She could be you.
Number Seven
We can't cover a list of unsung female photographers without at least including one wedding photographer, considering it's the one branch of photography women kind of run.
BrandiPotterPhoto is unique because she is so passionate about making sure other people know how to take photos.
She follows the trend of photographing small, intimate weddings and focusing more on the artistry and personalities of the couples.
Plus, she's the co-creator of This Workshop Doesn't Suck.
Happening this October in Cle Elum, Washington, the workshop shows you how to shoot in bad light and locations, how to invoke intimacy with your couples, and how to succeed in small difficult markets.
Number Eight
"The Female is the Protagonist."
This is basically the theme of Dulcinea_, run by Cheril Sanchez, which features high fashion shots (some of which have been featured in Vogue).
Her shots, unlike many others on this list, feature women of color as the centralized figures.
Editor's Tip: Do you have beautiful photos but aren't sure how to display them? Turn them into large format prints! See what your photos look like as fine art.
And considering this is something most fashion magazines are still unwilling to do, adding Dulcinea_ to your Instagram feed will feel normal.
Number Nine
You need to follow KamilaKStanley, if only to feel endlessly in love again.
She primarily features her incredible fashion work, like this campaign she just shot for Ugg's 40th anniversary.
But every once in a while you will find photos of her partner, her friends, and her brothers.
Everything she posts will make you crave for your youth.
Number Ten
Beano of MayaBeano is a research scientist who just so happens to also make incredible photography.
Multi-talented female photographers are our favorite because it oftentimes comes through in their portraits.
As is the case with Beano, her photos ask more questions and give less answers than anyone else on our list.
The cool color spectrum she is comfortable in is unsettling. Pair this with her habit of overlaying translucent portraits on top of formidable landscapes and her pictures are unforgettable.
That tops off our list of ten unsung, heroic female photographers. Who did we miss? Let us know below!
