- How To Choose a Monitor for Video Editing
If you’ve been reading my articles about video and photo editing, you have probably noticed I really like my upgraded editing studio featuring ViewSonic ultra-wide curved screen monitors. I am using the 34” ViewSonic VP3481 and the 38” ViewSonic VP3881 monitors.
For this ViewSonic VP3881 review, I’ll list some of the things that may seem like cons at first, and then list the ViewSonic VP3881 features and benefits so you can see if one of these monitors should be your next monitor upgrade.
ViewSonic VP3881 Pros & Cons
These cons may dissuade some from switching to new, larger monitors but I see them as simply part of the cost of upgrading.
These monitors are huge, especially when compared with 17,19, or 21 inch monitors in high end laptops. By the way, I use laptops for almost all of my computing anymore. They have all of the power desktop computers and are portable. So, I tend to use my laptops even when sitting at my desk that I use for my home office and editing studio.
An ultra-wide monitor takes up much more desk space than the entire laptop, using a two monitor takes up even more. So, I mounted mine on a bracket. Not only does that save desk space, it also puts the monitors closer to eye level so I have less neck soreness and eye strain.
A large monitor with a curved screen takes up slightly more space than a flat screen due to increased depth, but again, I use a bracket, so not a major issue.
It also takes a while to get used to viewing a curved screen monitor. All of the benefits of curved screens are still there, such as immersive viewing, but the first few times you sit down to it, it will feel slightly off. Once you get deep into your editing though, you won’t even notice until you realize you don’t have a headache from eye strain.
ViewSonic VP3881 Specs
Now let’s take a look at the ViewSonic VP3881 specs. It is 38” diagonally, with an ultra-wide aspect ratio, and the screen is slightly curved. That’s the basics, now on to some specifics.
It is an IPS display monitor, which is describing a type of LCD, In-Plane Switching. IPS displays have better viewing angles than other types of crystals used in flat panel TVs. So, having a curved screen IPS monitor is very comfortably viewed from an angle.
It uses Adobe RGB as it’s color space, so it will accurately display colors from professional editing programs for photos and video. It is extremely high resolution and has a wide range of adjustable contrast levels.
There are multiple inputs, too, including 2 HDMI 2.0, a Display Port 1.4, and a USB C with charging power.

The outstanding color accuracy and usefulness is due to the ViewSonic commitment to fulfilling the needs of professional videographers and photographers. ViewSonic professional monitors use Adobe RGB color space as the default color handling protocol. And finally, the ViewSonic VP3881 and VP3481 monitors are capable of displaying 4.39 trillion colors, more than most of us can discern with our eyes.
Overall Performance
The bottom line concerning the ViewSonic VP3881 performance is that it’s one of the better monitor upgrades available for professional and other serious photographers and videographers.
Here’s what makes it a good choice as a monitor upgrade for an editing studio. The huge curved screen in an ultra-wide aspect ratio provides an immersive viewing experience making it easy to see everything on screen and reduce eye strain.
That wide aspect ratio and the multiple input ports allows for several programs to be displayed at once. This tiling is supported by the monitor operating system meaning your editing sessions will have an optimal workflow.
The ViewSonic VP3881 has impeccable sharpness and high resolution along with amazing color capabilities such as Adobe RGB color space and handling over 4.39 trillion colors. If you are looking at upgrading your own editing studio with a new monitor, you owe it to yourself to check out the ViewSonic VP388 curved screen monitor.
