Every season of the year is a time to visit Banff, a town nestled in the Canadian Rockies, and the jumping-off point for more adventure, action and activities to fill a lifetime. During the winter, Banff is a mecca for skiers, snowboarders and everyone who enjoys the clear mountain air and the spectacular scenery blanketed in beautiful snowfalls. Just 90 miles west of Calgary, the highlight of the Banff region is Banff National Park, Canada’s first, and now a part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
As much as the Banff winters are good for the spirit, its summers are for unimpeded exploration of the water, the woods and the mountains. For hikers and campers, the Park is a natural paradise with 1,000 miles of trails, some leisurely and others of the greatest challenge, as they lead you into the rugged and pristine backcountry. Lake Minnewanka and Lake Louise, the jewels of the Park, are perfect for family activities – from picnics to boat cruises to canoe trips.
Banff National Park is also a destination for the photographer who wants to capture nature in all its glory. The great craggy peaks of the Rockies, many flanked by glaciers, the highland meadows of color and riverine landscapes. Here is where the wildlife photographer will find the grizzly bear, woodland caribou, wolverine, lynx and an abundance of bird species.
